Yesterday, whilst grocery shopping, I bought Curly & Mo a coconut with the intention of putting it in their cage for them to play with...they seem to love natural things.
So far I've sawn it in half, removed all the coconut meat/flesh to end up with a nice clean looking shell, and now I'm wondering if there's anything else I need to do to it to make it budgie safe before putting it in their cage?
Cheers,
John.

why not drill some holes in it to hang it in the cage by some sizal (spelling??) rope and then drill more holes around the edge of the half nut shell and hang other little play things for them to play with. Budgies love to chew on things and love to play in general. You can hang bits of leather (craft leather) and maybe little bells (budgies love bells) maybe bits of natural wood from a safe branch (drill a hole in the wood when it is cut to size).....bits of rope, plastic chain ..... would have to be small plastic chain. I go second hand shopping quite often for bird toys and I look for things like unvanished baskets and decorations and baby toys and I order stuff from ebay at times and from PRC and other places. I have bought beads second hand ...... old necklaces and pull the beads off. I always make sure though that it is safe for beaks to chew........I have big guys and their beaks can chew through stuff rather quickly.

That's exactly what I did with it, and here's the finished article. I went looking for lots of little coloured wooden beads and things to decorate it with, but couldn't find any, so I settled for three little plastic balls that have small bells inside. After I put it in their cage I left them alone with it for a while, and when I went back to observe them they were both pushing and pulling at it making the little bells ring. They've both been over it, under it, but not inside as yet...I'm happy with it, and it appears that they are too. ;D Cheers, John.

That will entice them to go into it to explore ;D I did just that about five minutes ago. I put in a little of their favourite millett spray, now I'll just sit back and wait for results. Being males of the species, the easiest way to get them to do something is by rewarding them with food...just like most men. ;D Cheers, John.

Thanks for the kind words folks, but I figure that I'm the lucky one having two such wonderful budgies who appreciate everything I do for them.
Cheers,
John.
