i'm not sure what he is he's a great bird though..has total free range of the house, gate open all day and dad never puts him away or takes him out...he can be found on the above window sill or his fave is ceiling fans (yes..there has been a couple of accidents..ouchie)he loves to have a shower under the kitchen tap and look at himself in the stainless steel...he talks to all thhe outside birds and can mimic their calls..he does a really good rainbow lorrikeet!! sooo cute. olly was my bird..but since i moved out of home he didn't adjust very well and was soo quiet and hunched over, so as soon as we took him back to my parents he got himself back and he;s much happier again now

Budgie's are easy to sex kjjl have a look at the cere ( the fleshy section above the beak) if it's blue he is a boy if its cream or a nautral colour it's a girl.
As far as Olly being an English Budgie I would say no he is more like what is refered to here in Australia as a show budgieor a "pet shop" budgie. English budgies have a distinct shape both in the body and the head shape they are also a lot larger than the show or "pet shop" budgies.
It is a common mistake made by people to call thier birds English budgies here in Australia and they are more likley to be what is commonly called show budgies.

sorry..i should have explained I DO KNOW how to sex them..but olly went from blue, to pink, to blue to now a mix of both....so is he gay or something?? lol that's a joke I think he is an english budgie..he is definately not a normal budgie...and he isn't from a pet shop..he is from a breeder... as he ages (4 yrs old now) he is getting bigger on the head and his eyes are like slits..

Hi kjjl
The term "Pet Shop" budgie is used to describe the bird and is not meant to classify the bird as bieng purchased in a pet shop.
Olly is a boy but not english as he doesnt have the head shape of that particular mutation. You can see by the picture posted by AcaciaWattle that they have a very distingtive shape and the head shape is very pronounced. Olly is a fine example of what is called a show budgie , a very nice budgie indeed.

He is a big budgie with a big beautiful face. Olly is a big budgie! may be one of the biggest normals I've ever seen. I love the English budgies, everything is just bigger! Big cere, beak and head but these tiny eyes that can get lost in the feathers. My mum calls them Boof heads, but I think they are peaceful Giants.

Olly did go to a brown beak though..so who knows... he doesn't talk as such but my dad reckons he says hello to him..either way he's a great little bird bird..he's soo small compared to monty but soo big compared to other budgies..he's never been clipped though...he buzzes around everywhere

I love budgies, they can be so crazy at times. The Blue one in the photo above adopted us a little over a year ago. He just turned up on the front verandah! We looked for his owners but no one claimed him. His girlfriend is our original H/R budgie. It's a love/hate relationship, like them all but we think he was abused. You cannot get him out of his cage, it must be on his terms. Touch him and he will draw blood. It's really sad, he can be a good bird most of the time. It took me about 10 minutes to get him out of the cage for those photo's. Had to take out all the perches and open all the doors and force him out without putting my fingers near him He isn't my first abused bird tho.

i had 3 budgies before Olly and all 3 found me..they flew into schools we lived near (my dad's a principal...so we moved around and lived next to the schools) so each time we would search for owners and then end up keeping them...they've all been a bit silly...but great value lol

Budgies are my first love in the bird world and at one stage I had over 100 birds, now that was interesting.

budgies were also my first love...but compared to tiels they really are a little dull..i mean olly is a wonderful bird..but not a companion like monty is...monty is a child to me..we are extremely extremely close to each other..but i can never get that from a budgie...i dunno why.... just not as much character

The Bird in my avitar is called Golden majic, he was my best stud bird and gave me many babies he was also a champion bird and my pride and joy, it was a big loss when he died of old age. I still have budgies carrying his genes.

He is a really beautiful bird, I love his big beautiful face with the dark markings. It's sad to hear he's gone but I hope that his grandkids will do you proud! I don't own this budgie anymore but could you tell me what the colouration is called. Thanks it's not a really good photo but her colour was a yellow cinnamon, she has red eyes. I sold her along with 90% of my budgies, we couldn't keep them anymore. Townsville has a law, a really stupid law stating you need a permit to keep over 25 birds. We had 34 and couldn't afford the permit of $87.50 per year. Not only that (being a birdaholic) you also have to state what breed, how many and what sex of the birds your applying for the permit for before you get the permit. Does that make sense??? eg. i want to keep finches. I must tell them what species (Gouldians, zebra and cordons) how many (20, 50, 10 birds) and their sexes. I'd also have to allow them 24/7 access, have permission from the land owner for them to come on the land, permission to keep them on this land, permission from ALL neighbours (3 behind, either side and directly in front) Have all the cages prepaired for inspection. All before finding out if the permit has been granted and all on top of NPWS permits etc. All this For FINCHES, budgies, red rumps, Cockies EVERYTHING. So I said FORGET IT! I'll sell them

If he has red eyes he is called a Fallow Yes I agree with you about it being a silly law and Im afraid i would be in big trouble up there.

Thanks John and one more question Are fallows or red eyes prone to problems with their eyes more so than other budgies?
