Hi guys, I just wanted to show you pictures of my 2 Cockatiel chicks. They'll be 4 weeks old on Wednesday and Thursday, and becoming such cute little things. They're still a fair bit ugly, one of them(Big Chick) unfortunately had his head plucked just after he started growing his crest, and is still looking a little like a vulture! He's such a cuddler, he climbed right up in under my mum's hair today, quite happy to sit their and cuddle. The other(Little Chick), is a bit more grumpy, but still wants to sit right beside you, I think he's just a little less sure of us, he gets scared a lot easier than his sibling. We think Big Chick will end up looking a fair bit like his dad, and it looks like Little Chick is going to end up a Pearled Grey, I think the mum must have a Pearl gene, she's quite a looker. Unfortunately neither of them inherited her colour. Here is Big Chick: And Little Chick: The two of them together: And our cock and hen, Chicken and Speckle: Any clues on colours would be fantastic, never been too sure what colour Speckle is, if anyone on here is a colour expert, I'd love your opinions. I've had a read around on Google, and they should be ready to start to fly soon, which is just a bit scary! But they are getting decently feathered. In a way I don't want them to grow up, they're such funny little things.

Ooops, I just realised that you can't see Speckle's head in that picture! Oops, I'll have to take some nicer photos of them tomorrow.
(That's also our Red-Wing's eye in the bottom left corner)

Hi,
The colours of your cockatiel babies are pied for Big Chick and Pearl for Little Chick.
Their mother is a White-face cinnamon pearl pied - or at least I think so without seeing her face - and their father is a normal grey but must be split (carry the genes) to pied and pearl.
cute babies!
cheers,
Mike

Yes I was going to say the hen looks the same colour as our snowy and she is a white faced cinnamon pearl....but funny you should add pied to it Mike ;D because it was only a couple of weeks ago after we went to a friends place who breeds cockatiels and she told me the birds of hers that we like are pieds (they are white with dark flight feathers...sort of look like saddle backs??)........I started to think that Snowy might be pied also because of the darker and plain colouring on her flight feathers.
She has said she is going to downsize her birds and her house (moving from her 1 acre block in the middle of town to a house block size).....she is almost 80 years old and such a fit little thing but finding it harder to look after 3 dogs (she does obedience trials and judges) and probably over 100 birds .... possibly 200??? And she suggested we could have some of her cockatiels after she has picked her favourites to keep.

They are cute babies (but tiels are the ugliest babies until they get their feathers). I like the last photo with them both in it.

Do White faces have the orange cheek markings? No, white-faces have no yellow or orange - they have lost the ability to form those colours. cheers, Mike

Laraine this is Snowy and she is a girl ;D She has darkened slightly....around her chest she is more like a slight dirty colour (cinnamon) and her flight feathers are a darker colour not black maybe a coffee sort of colour with the pearling on her wings. She was a baby here ..... she is about 18 months old now. this one she is probably under 12 months old but her colouring is much the same. I was told she is a white faced cinnamon pearl.......could she be pied also??

no worries........I thought she was pretty anyway ;D and will be looking for a handsome "hubby" for her. I think the ones we like from my friend .... I think she said they are pieds. They are white with black on their wings and tails.......Stephen loves the colour of them. I have seen similar at someone elses place that they were handraising and I am sure they told me theirs were saddlebacks?? oops and sorry for hijacking the thread

My cockatiel looks like a Lutino with orange cheek markings but has colour on his wings like Speckle. I don't quite know what it is.

Saddleback isn't a recognised term for cockatiels, pied covers the birds being called saddleback. Since your girl is a white-face try to get a white-face pied male. That way any babies will be white-face.
And Laraine, your bird sounds like a pied, and if it has the pearl markings on the wing it will be a pearl-pied. If it is cinnamon in colour then it is a (pearl)-pied cinnamon. Pieds can vary tremendously in the proportion of colour to white feathers. From a basically grey bird with just a few white feathers where they shouldn't be to a white bird with just a couple of grey feathers. In fact you can have have, in a white face pied, a pure white bird that is only distinguished as a pied by having black eyes instead of the red eyes of an albino.
I'll have a look through my photos and see what pieds I have to post here - I'll make it a new thread under the cockatiel section.
cheers,
Mike

He's pretty gorgeous isn't he? Funny thing too, you'd think we had a Cocky and a King Parrot in the house as well as the rest! But no, just him. And he makes Chook noises too sometimes, but I think that might be his Princess Parrot noise? I don't know when he would've met a chook. He really is quite gorgeous, him and Tim(the Red Wing) are boyfriends, don't go anywhere without each other, and sleep cuddled up together at night.
