Hi , Im getting my 2nd pair of GCCs in 10 days which should in time give me unrelated pairs of GCCs for sale . I wondering what the procedure is in regards to DNA sexing and ringing the birds ...
What age would I have them DNA tested ? Do they get leg rings before or after DNA ? What type of leg rings ? What age to apply leg rings ? Where do I get leg rings? What size leg ring?
I currently use plastic split rings on my birds but they are only to tell me who my breeding stock are .
Ive noticed the GCCs I have and the new ones are rung with metal rings .
Cheers

Oh ooops also the local vet here does surgical DNA testing , I usually send blood away to DNA Solutions but since they are the same price which would be the best one to use.

Hi , Im getting my 2nd pair of GCCs in 10 days which should in time give me unrelated pairs of GCCs for sale . I wondering what the procedure is in regards to DNA sexing and ringing the birds ... What age would I have them DNA tested ? You can have a DNA done at almost any age but normally around 3 weeks. Do they get leg rings before or after DNA ? If your going to leg ban your chicks 10 days usually. So before DNA What type of leg rings ? Closed Rings What age to apply leg rings ? As above. Where do I get leg rings? Lentra. PSOA. What size leg ring? size 9 for GCC if from the PSOA Hope this has helped. I currently use plastic split rings on my birds but they are only to tell me who my breeding stock are . Ive noticed the GCCs I have and the new ones are rung with metal rings . Cheers

Surgical sexing is 100% sure. Especially if the birds older. Plus you don't have to wait for the results. Also while the Vet it looking he will check other organs to see if the bird is healthy.

I just have a pair a cage. I am not a fan of rings have had a few birds get caught up & broke their legs. So i kind of avoid them as much as possible.
Some place the ring on opposite legs so i would think that would be after they are DNA'd. You would be able to do that easily if you were to have them SS'd when they come out the girls feet are dipped in pink dye. LOL. You would have to use a split ring in that case. Or use your plastic rings & just replace them when the DNA results come back, which ever way you do it.

I usually dna mine when I take them out of the nest but with Rikki since he was only 2 days old I waited until he was around 10 days I think then dna'd him and I knew by the time he was around 4 weeks old what he was.
As for ringing.......I put the ring on Rikki I think it was 13 days and it fell off but put it back on the next day and it stayed on......that is how fast he grew. The others were about the same age......actually a little older because I remember I almost couldn't get it on the older one of the clutch a few years ago and remembered not to wait so long next time.

Oh and I wouldn't have rung Rikki because he was the only one I was feeding at the time so I didn't need to be able to identify him but since losing Gunny and Takoda I could easily identify Takoda if he was found because I knew his number but did not actually know Gunny's number and this made me realise putting a leg ring on Rikki might come in handy one day (I bloody hope not though I have lost enough birds to last me quite some time). And one bird was handed into a pet shop and I got a phone call to say an Alex male had been found so I got all excited again ....... only to find out the leg ring number was not Takoda's........so the leg rings can be handy sometimes.
Erik and Snowy are not rung.......but I am sure with Erik and his one badly damaged eye and him being 'mummy's boy' I am sure I would not have ANY difficulty identifying him and Snowy is also not rung but she is not too common a colour ........ I would hope I could identify her if she was lost. Whereas Alexandrines do all look alike........well males look like males and hens look like hens when they are mature.

you can micro chip them.......but then the people have to be honest I guess and the vet would have to be suspicious I suppose before they were "scanned" ?? Where as ringing is easy.......but your corella is not a little baby anymore either??? So it would need to be open rung wouldn't it??? Mine are closed rung stainless steel and they wont be able to get their foot into a closed rung ring after about 2 weeks.......definetly not 3 weeks anyway and your guy is a few months isn't he??

Oh and I have seen surgical sexing.........as I realise others have seen it done too. I myself wouldn't do it to a bird.......it appeared to be extremely invasive. Have you ever seen the vet on tv try to push a tube between the ribs of a dog that needed the air or blood taken out of the chest cavity??? It looked like he might break the ribs?? That is what it looked like to me when I saw the surgical sexing. Yes the bird was put under and yes it is very very quick...........but OMG I much prefer to prick the birds toe and get a drop of blood and send it away and wait about 1 to 2 weeks. But that is just me......

I was thinking perhaps one of the wedding band type of rings that Lentra sell for larger parrots , def too big to be close rung now. I assume this is the Corella we are talking about? If so it will have to be a Stainless Steel split ring, which need special pliers to safely put on. An aluminium ring would be too soft and the corella would end up squeezing the ring tight against the leg and cut off blood to the foot if you didn't spot it. I have had plenty of birds brought into our shop with squeezed aluminium split rings - especially on ringnecks - that the bird had squeezed and were in danger of loosing the foot, and some that did lose their foot. We had a special tool for cutting these rings off and it was often very tricky to do. Some had to go to the vet to get them off under anaesthetic. cheers, Mike
