Heres a recipe for my bird bread as requested by Floss.
All my birds love it from Finches up to Corella .
I make it my soft food because I know they will eat it .
I use Jiffy Corn Muffin mix which I buy from USA groceries online but I know of other people who have used other Cornbread mixes like Orgran available from health food shops .
I pack of Jiffy 2 eggs 1/2 to 3/4 cup L.S.A ( Linseed , Sunflower and Almond from healthfood shop) I apple grated 1 carrot grated handful of spinach or any leafy veg chopped . 1 tin apple baby food ( this replaces the milk in the recipe)
I do the fruit / veg in the food processor first then add LSA , eggs and lastly the Jiffy and baby food.
Bake as per directions then cool , cut into cubes and freeze .
Hope you like it and more importantly hope your birds love it , Im sure they will.
Ooops the egg shells can go into the food processor too , extra calcium wont hurt .

LOL Floss , I now have to make a cornbread just for the other half , good with stews . So glad your birds liked it too .
Ive given up trying all the different types of soft foods for birds , I think the bread is OK , cant get enough in the aviary for the parrots with youngins .
My dogs follow me around from aviary to aviary hoping for any pieces of bread that the birds havent eaten . Its a winner .

I agree completely with you!! I wanted to ask you about the Jiffy corn bread/muffin mix you buy. I actually couldn't get it anywhere here of course, but I couldn't even the Orgran one....so I bought cornmeal and made it that way.....I read somewhere that cornmeal is actually polenta? Which is way cheaper than buying the packet mix I would expect? Your opinions on that one? Also, with the Jiffy mix, do you add the butter for the birds etc? Or just use the apple etc. Any other hints and tips!! would be appreciated too..... Thanks heaps Flossy

I buy the Jiffy from www.usafoods.com.au/store/login.php......I only do it this way because Im not a great lover of cooking and if I had to do it from scratch it wouldn't get done . I only use the apple puree to replace the milk , no butter or any dairy food at all. Im pretty sure polenta and corn meal are the same if there's any difference it might be that one is ground finer than the other . Another lady I know adapted the recipe to include a can of creamed corn which inspired me to try the fresh corn . I think the recipe could be tweaked many ways and so long as its fresh fruit and veg you cant go wrong . The original recipe I pinched used frozen mix vegies . Might have a look at some polenta recipes on the net to save some more $$$$ . Thanks for that tip .

Cool...thanks! I did find that shop you mentioned, but I thought surely I can make that myself! I don't think polenta is that expensive!! I bought my cornmeal from the health food shop along with the LSA.....Perphaps a cup of polenta, a cup of wholemeal SR flour, 3/4 cup of LSA.....and then add whatever....eggs, apple puree, creamed corn....mixed vegies etc.....the list is endless really! I added some natural sultana's to one lot I cooked too....so yeah, you are right....it can be tweaked to suit! As long as you have the basics, I can't see much difference?

Or if birds can't eat wholemeal SR flour - what about gluten free flour? that might be better???

Dont know about the gluten affecting birds , I was more concerned about keeping it dairy free. I suppose with all the fresh ingredients , eggs , cornmeal etc there really isnt a lot of flour in the mix .
It would be interesting to know how much flour is in egg and biscuit mix which is given to birds all the time , just for comparison.
I know this is going to sound wrong to a lot of people but I kinda think that we cage them , we control them so if they get joy out of something and its reasonably good for them then why not .
Plus this time of year they need the extra soft food / calories to help them keep warm .
Back to the flour if given a choice I think gluten free would probably be the safe option.

Or if birds can't eat wholemeal SR flour - what about gluten free flour? that might be better??? I don't think birds can be gluten intolerant - given the natural diet of seed eating birds the development of gluten intolerance would be a pretty bad move evolutionary - a bird would simply not survive. Gluten is found in wheat, oats barley and rye, all seeds used in some types of bird seed mixes. And wholemeal SR flour is fine to use - my birds get a bit of multi-grain bread every morning along with their other goodies. And instead of using corn muffin mix which I never see here in Australia, why not use a plain Madeira cake mix - many recipes I've seen use that. cheers, Mike

It doesn't sound wrong at all!! Not to me anyway....I do whatever I can for my birds....and if some people don't agree - that is their choice. We are all different and that's what makes us all special. I can't see anything wrong with Birdie Bread.......Mike has clarified the gluten thing....I will be using Wholemeal flour now, and yes, my birds have the wholegrain bread too...so that makes sense!! I'm silly for not thinking of that before I posted.....

Thanks Mike on the gluten issue and Ill be giving the madeira cake mix a try when the Jiffy runs out .
Floss I think we just need a second opinion sometimes , makes us feel like we are on the right track lol.

Now that Mike mentions it, my AV suggested giving them some Madeira cake, so I might try making it with that. Tinga is a pain in the butt when it comes to new food though. If he hasn't eaten it before, he's convinced it isn't food or will kill him. What self respecting bird won't touch corn on the cob or fresh fruit - it's Tinga!

I'm going to try the madeira cake too! for sure Hubby can eat that plain...lol. Mike, would you add similar things to that as well? Fruit, vegies etc I am guessing it is just the base for whatever you think would suit the birds you are feeding it too. This is endless isn't it!! I'm still going to try polenta and wholemeal flour as well...... Lots of idea's now......and Robyn!! corn on the cob??? wow, Tinga doesn't know what's good for him!! lol!!

......and Robyn!! corn on the cob??? wow, Tinga doesn't know what's good for him!! lol!! no he doesn't and not even me eating a corn cob in front of him makes any difference. He won't even try it. It works out well for the lorikeets though, because they end up with a 2nd cob. I think the problem may be that he wasn't given veggies in his prior life and his ways were set when he came to me at 5yrs.
