Hi all ;D Was wondering if you could give me a bit of help! My hubby has very kindly agreed to buy me a cockatiel for my birthday, but it's been strongly suggested that we buy from a breeder, however, I can't really find any where we live. We are from Sydney, and I was wondering if you could steer us in the right direction.....we want to have a look this weekend if we can, and also advise us on approximately how much a baby hand-reared one will cost...we have a cage already! Thanks! TEXT

Hi Princess & welcome to this great forum. Hope someone can help steer you to a breeder as it would be better buying one from them rather than a shop. When choosing one make sure it is bright eyed & alert. As to the cost it really will depend on most cases of the colour of the bird as people charge different prices ranging from $50.00 for a normal grey upwards for different colours. Try to make sure the bird is h/reared as trying to tame an avairy bird is quite difficult if you don't have the time & often they will not tame up. Hope this helps in some ways. Cheers Anna

Thanks Anna - Do you have any ideas of how I might find a breeder in Sydney...I looked on the Australian National Cockatiel Society website and they only had one there for the whole of NSW!

Have you tried this site. It is really quite good & I have purchased a bird through it. We have a few NSW people here but it is coming to the end of the breeding season so might not be much around. Cheers Anna www.petlink.com.au/Birds/Advertising_Board/

I did try here, but again, most of them aren't from Sydney Are most of the people on there breeders? I don't even know what age is a good age to buy one from if I want to train one myself!

To tell the truth I really wouldn't know if they are breeders or not. I usually sell my h/reared babies from about 8 weeks of age & they are very easy to train. I train mine to step up & to also like head scratches & kisses but that is just me. The tamer the tiel the easier it is to train, the older it is the harder it is in my opinion. Okay here is another site that might help. Go to avi trade on the left hand side. www.parrotsociety.org.au/default.htm?http://www.parrotsociety.org.au/stolenBirds/default.htmCheers Anna

Gday all! Unfortunately im in the same boat as princess, im desperately searching for a hand-reared female tiel for my 5month old male who gets quite lonely when im at work. Im also in sydney, i brought my tiel from a shop and unfortunately he wasnt the healthiest little bugger so im kind of reluctant to buy another tiel from a shop.. i paid $250 for him so im kind of hoping i could find a cheaper companion for him.. any help would be appreciated!! im a first time tiel owner so its all new to me.. Thannnnnnks
