There are many types of finches. There are grass finches. There are song bird finches There are others. One of the song finches is called the European Goldfinch. They have a lovely song. Hopefully in the near future in Australia, they will become more common again, just as they were, when I was a teenager. www.finchinfo.com/birds/finches/species/european_goldfinch.php from Robert and Precious

Ok now I know what they look like...........they sort of look like a cross between a finch (maybe a gualdian and a sparrow) don't they. LOL

I know they do look a bit strange, especially with their long pointey beak.Still what they lack here, the European Goldfinch easily compensate with lovely song. from Robert and Angel

;)These Finches l remember were very popular in my childhood back in the 70's ..l personnally owned a few pairs without any success in breeding They are from my days back then, very hard to breed in captivity (don't know about now for l don't own any) like you mentioned Robert they have a great song and hopefully will make a come back. Latley they are making a comeback just as a mule version so who knows in the future

When the European Gold Finch and the canary are crossed they produce a bird with the most beautiful song you have ever heard, that's why they were cross bred in the first place.
I always found that the European gold finch suffered from scally face and were a bit disease prone, however they were a bird well worth the effort of breeding.

Yes, they do make great song and when they are cross-breed even better and breeding them found takes a effort also Trouble is with the offspring they were mules and couldn't reproduce. John

I am in the process of builing a 3 bay aviary and was wondering what to put in the 3rd bay...I think I have my answer!! Now, just to hunt down a local breeder (andyone know of any in the Darling Downs area or even Brisbane??)

It very good taht they are trapped, they have wipped out many native finch species from areas, the fee covers the work the people go through to get them. THye are feral and should be eradicated

I guess being trapped and sold is better than what happens to Quakers in some countries and Eclectus in PNG...........and probably many other birds that are considered "pests" in the area they live in.
