I'm looking for somewhere cheap to have my Crimson Rosella dna tested. Who does everyone else use. I know there is a place in Africa where my Princess Parrot was tested.

Loraine, I use MDS Australia to do my Dna testing. You take a small amount of blood from the birds toe and send it away to be tested. The kits are 55cents each and to get one bird Dna tested it will cost $15.29. I can always send you a kit and the information if you like. Loraine how old is the rosella? Rosellas are easy to sex by looking at their head shap. The male has a wider flater head and the hen has a rounded head. The males also box their wings. Have you got a photo?

I can't tell the difference, but I'll look at the head shape and take a photo. She was sold as a she, but hasn't shown any interest in breeding although she is in with 2 males. She didn't breed for the previous owner either and he sold "her" when the partner died. What do you mean by box their wings?

Is she with 2 male crimsons? She might be a male. To have 2 males in with 1 female the males would be almost killing themselves fighting. Males will fight over one girl. Boxing is when the males will lift their shoulders up to make themselvers look big they also will wiggle their tails. Do the males do this?

I looked at the shape of the heads and they all looked the same. I'll take a photo on the weekend. I'm suspecting that it is a male. I'll get it dna tested as I will have to swap for a female. I don't need 3 males. Will post a photo next week.

Loraine the first photo looks like a cock bird. Another way of telling the sex of a adult birds is looking under the wings the hens have a white stripe running under the wings and the cocks dont. All rosellas have the stripe when they are babies and the cocks loose it a about 12 months of age.

Loraine you don't have to cut. Did you get the kits from MDS australia. They would have supplied you with a needle to prick the birds toe. You only have to prick the toe and a bead of blood will appear and you just take the swap stick and put it on the blood. The bird doesn't even feel it.

Well this weekend I am finally going to test the Crimson. I'm a bit worried as they bite so hard, so wish me luck.

Well I took the sample, luckily I didn't get bitten. I went in there with gardening gloves on, but luckily "she" didn't manage to get a bite in. The sample has been sent away so I should find out soon.

Well I've just received the DNA results. She is definitely a GIRL. Now I have to work out why no one is interested in the opposite sex.
