I know this not necessarily a genetics topic but its partly the reason why i have posted this here... I have noticed that they are a popular bird these days the lovebird and more varieties are becoming regularly available but I find it irritating when i walk in to a pet store and they have all the lovebirds into one cage the masks, the peachface, the fischers, the nyasa someone needs to eduacate this ignorant people... I know that these store are more of the pet paradises and other generic pet stores but can some please explain to them that they are different birds and shouldnt be housed together even though they come from the same family. I understand that they are just housing them together temporarily however this just highlights on to the newbie bird keeper that these practices are acceptable... it just p....s me off...

Yes agree when they mix birds that shouldn't be house together, had that experiance last week when l was looking for a Superb Parrot .They had Lorikeets housed with a pair of Superb's? I had a word with the manager and she agreed to move them into another cage on there own

amen to that wilsta... I had the same thought only last sunday when I went into a pet shop in Brisbane (which will remain nameless). they were housing rainbows and scaley brests together and I overheard one of the girls there telling a woman that they were fine to keep in an aviary together even if breedng because there was no way they would mate. when I questioned her on it (politely may I say) she got quite short with me and tld me that she had been breeding them for almost 8 years in the same aviary and had never had a problem... hmmmm...not what I would have thought but what would I know

Thanks for this Wilsta.Inappropiate birds ought not to be housed together. Like you said, new people to birds ,parrots might get the wrong impression.Clearly there are pet stores that need to lift their game. from Robert and Angel

The pet shop i commonly use (to buy feed fish for the turtles) always has birds housed together when they really shouldnt be! The staff dont seem to know a whole lot either if you ask them a question the answers always "umm i dont know sorry", Theyres alway sick animals in the display cases for sale and i dont know why they dont remove them until theyre well! But i suppose the pet shop is only ruining its own reputation as sad as it is for these animals. I guess the only thing we can do is try to correct them when they go wrong and not buy from the dodgy and badly maintained petshops

You would think pet shops would take some more care in raising the pets in their store... but they dont care... as long as they get sold.

I know there is an attempt to stop Pet Shops from selling pets. Even if one believes they ought to be able to do so,then clearly those pet shops that behave like this, aren't helping. There are pet shops that are doing the right thing. But with others , there is a conflict with concern for the pets and concern about the behaviour of the pet shop. from Robert and Angel

Yes I remember there was a petition about stopping the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores Yes with no-one to advise I could have easily bought 2 fish that would have fought to the death but since no-one could tell me I went elsewhere rather than risk it.

It's not just only that, what bugs me is pet shops not knowing what they have in type or breeds of animals or the conditions they should be kept in. I went into the main pet shop in town that had just moved premises lately and the conditions the birds are in shocked me. The big parrots were in cages with 2 or 3 in which was alright but the budgies my goodness, I was shocked big time but the biggest shock was the lighting. I walked in there and said to number 2 we need a torch to see the birds. I could not even see what sex the Western Rosella was, it was that dark.

I hate how they keep the birds in cabinets which sometimes have 20 other birds enclosed in them! the birds cant fly around properly and because of the overpopulation and cage design the food and water becomes tainted with poo and feathers and whatever else there is!I really do wish that to buy a pet you had to a go to a breeder, that way you are most likley bound to having a pet desexed and the breeder will be able to provide any relevent info on how to care for the pet! it should be a legal requirement for anyone with cats or dogs to have them desexed if they are not a licensed breeder. Strong restrictions should also be placed on pets being bought over chrissy!

Lol reminds me, we had two masked and a peachface and the peachface loved one of the masked ones but hated the other. Very protective.

well the two pet shops here I really can't complain about I guess. The smaller one doesn't keep a lot of animals and the bigger one has their birds for sale in fairly big aviaries. Birds are kept together in groups of breed or similar size and there seems to be plenty of room for them to move around.
The worst pet shop I have ever seen was in Kingaroy...........it stunk of dead mice/rats and I just couldn't stand the smell.........

Tracey... I know the pat shop you are talking about in Kingaroy and I have a feeling that it closed down. Either that or they have moved because last time I was up that way we drove past where it used to be and there was nothing there... probabbly a darn good thing i reckon. I am starting work at out local pet shop tomorrow for one day a week. I am not a huge fan of most pet shops but this one is really good. The guy who owns the shop (and works there most of the time) actually breeds about 80% of the birds for sale so he really knows what he is talking about. other than that they have basic fish (it think the most "exotic" fish is a mexican walking fish!) and he has kittens occasionally. ahh and not to forget guinny pigs (the short eared variety ) and the owner's kids breed them!!

The best pet shops are those little family owned ones where the own is the person you deal with and they do it because they love animals. I hate those chain stores. Back when I first started breeding masked lovebird I call to sell some of excess they offered me $6 ea which I reluctently took because I needed the space. Only to see them placed in a cage with a sign that read lovebirds $59.95 each. How is that fair you expect retailers to put 100% mark up maybe a bit more to cover the seed but almost 1000%. Well I guess at least they were only with other masked lovebirds!

See I love my pet shop. I went down there today with 10 Budgies to sell and got talking to the guy and he told me NOT to sell one of the Budgies and then gave us a female to go with them and then some extra ivermectin and some canker treatment and gave us about $15 a budgie...... Sure I can get $20 - $30 if i sell them privatly and I know they will sell them for $30 but hey for $5 less I can get rid of 10 at a time and no one coming into my home! I really think it depends on the shop

I've only been in maybe 3 pet stores where I have had any confidence in the owner/staff. Many places think they know everything about the animals they sell simply because they own/run a bet store. Heck, any moron can run a pet store!

The reason why so many poor pet shops stay open, is that you only have to know a little bit about the animals you sell to know more about them than 90% of your customers.
While we are engaging in a bit of pet shop bashing, we have a classic near us. A local shop that has been open around 4 years, that, when one of our staff visited and tested them by asked what to do about a plucking cockatiel recommended feeding it mealworms!!! I get very frustrated that shops such as that are taking potential customers away from my shop.
cheers,
Mike
