Actually it was me Vicki and the saying goes "Bloody birds.... they will be the death of me". Hope it didn't do any damage to you, the car or the Galah [glow=red,2,300]John[/glow]

vicki,
be careful there. i used to know people who worked in casualty and the stories i heard of drivers in your situation who didnt walk way arent pretty.
i was told never swerve as that will surely cause an accident.
i was also told never honk like a madman as that will scare the animal and either freeze it or cause a huge hassle.
not saying you tried to swerve or anything. just be careful ok.

Simon, It is against the law not to try to avoid hitting an animal here in NSW, in fact just recently some low life was prosecuted here for driving through a flock of Galahs and killing and maiming them not too far from me.

i never said not to try to minimise the situation by braking or such.
but what if you swerve and kill someone or hit another car or kill yourself by running into a power-pole?

where i live people have pigeons and we have heaps of wild birds.
so i drive at an almost dead crawl in case somethings out and about.
not heartless or anything but if its a case of my survival id take a fine as long as id done everything i safely could ie slowing down and such.

"It is against the law not to try to avoid hitting an animal here in NSW, in fact just recently some low life was prosecuted here for driving through a flock of Galahs and killing and maiming them not too far from me." Unfortunately the police and insurance companies don't see it that way. In our drivers ed books in WA, it tells you NOT to swerve. I've seen some b**** deliberately swerve to the side of the road to TRY to hit birds. Personally we just slow down if we can see an animal ahead, that way you can react better by stopping or reduce any possible damage. Sometimes you just can't help it though - Claire

claire, i dont know the law up here in Qld as i got my license in another state.
i totally agree with you about slowing down etc.
wether i would swerve depends on safety of doing so. i was merely repeating advice however not an iron-clad opinion.

The law up here says you do not swerve to miss an animal...it says to carefully brake and sound horn.......also if you hit an animal you must stop and see if it is alive or not! If it is dead it should be moved to the side of the road and the council called or it still alive then it is suposed to be taken to a vet!... Jo-Anne

Uhummmm....I would think it would be in your best interest Simon to familiarise yourself with the road rules in the state you reside. I am afraid the police do not accept ignorance as an excuse!! Jo-Anne

When you go to the Log in page tick the box that says always remain logged in and you won't have to remember, the forum will log you in and keep you logged in. I didnt say it wasn't ok I was just enquiring if you were having trouble so i could fix it for you.
