Just wondering what liscence I need to cover me bill or anyone who knows. I have a recreational liscence which allows me any bird unless Im breeding them and I have to update it. Will this licsence cover me for Jetta? As Im only keeping her as a pet I think I will be right. Not sure.

Here in W.A. we are controlled by Dept of Conservation and Land Management, and all Black Cockatoos come under a separate section of licensing ...Advanced Agricultural Licence...Here we dont automatically have the right to "Advanced" just because we have a normal license even single "pet"birds....(some parrots come under this sec` also.) They are very strict license requirements in this sect, You have to apply for the right to purchase one, BEFORE you purchase in order to be able to transfer on the day of purchase, because the seller HAS to notify the Dept that he has sold the bird to the holder with license #........ on the day of purchase he has to give you his License # and he has to have yours also and this info goes back to the dept and he has to keep in his records. But, its best to give the licensing dept a call before you get your baby and establish a Advanced License for yourself to find out whats required. Cheers, Bill.

Just an addition to that, .......After you have an established Advanced license, you can add to this without notifying the dept before purchase, but you MUST inform them straight away after with details ..ie...sellers name and number. But this info i have pointed out is for W.A. ..you may have diff requirements in your state.

I think I have what is called a recreational licence to keep Skye (eclectus), but have no idea if I need another one to keep any other type of bird, like a native type. I thought the one I had for Skye was because she is an eclectus and not the Australian sub species. I was also under the impression that you don't need a licence to keep ekkies in Victoria and maybe even NSW.........but could be wrong on that one.
Of course if and when I do decide to add to my flock I will ask the "questions".......but hey Judy we live in the same state, I am curious what you find out.

In W.A. and i can only quote for this state, ....Eclectus is listed as needing an Advanced Avi` License along with Green Rosella,Northern Rosella, Golden Shouldered Parrot, Purple Crowned Lorikeet, Gang-gangs, there is a few more but i have not heard any one mention those on this site. Yes it does pay to "ask the questions" when it comes to certain types of birds and requirements to keep them.

thanks bill. Have just rung ecoaccess up about liscence. All I need is a movement advice form. That is being sent out to me at the moment, as I am only keeping jetta as a petbird and not breeding her or sending or recieveing her from overseas. I already have my recreational liscence for most of my birds and turtle so I am basically covered by that. Only cost me 2.75 for a movement advice. All I have to do now is ring the airport up and see what I need to pick her up with.

Ok, sounds good ,it appears licensing requirements to be quite relaxed your end,so that makes things easier for you. Did Eco access stipulate on the movement to or from overseas?, be interesting if they did because its illegal to export Blacks overseas, and to buy overseas the cost would be exorbitant, ...

yeah, overseas is a different matter lol. Id need to upgrade my liscence for that, but as I said all I need is the recreational one and a movement advice as I am only keeping her as a petbird. It would be illegal to export any bird overseas wouldnt it?

Yes, and Aust Cockatoos are worth huge dollars O/seas, which of course is the incentive to attempt bird and reptile smuggling. When i had a advert in Petlink to sell a YellowTail i got calls from world wide ready with their own "agents" to pick the bird up for shipping within the couple of days. They thought the bird was very cheap at $3000, knowing it would be 30/40 thou, at the very least O/seas.

Yes, that would def` be a scam to extract lots of $from the unsuspecting, >:(because they know you would not expect them to dispatch a "bird" without depositing the payment into their acc`.

Thats what Ive always been worried about when I buy a bird over the petlink site, specially when paying alot of dollars for one. But my breeder seems pretty sincere and has been keeping me updated with Jetta and seems to know what hes talking about. Plus he doesnt want any money sent till Jettas ready to go the day before, so that has put my mind at ease as well.

Hey bill?? Ive just been told by my breeder that she is eating a mixture of canary seed and sunflower seed, and also veg. Is this ok? I hate to question him but just want to make sure she is on a good diet.

Judy, Nat told me earlier this year that Skye should be eating smaller seed than what I was giving her. She reckoned that like "small parrot seed" which looks like a mixture of canary, budgie and sunflower seeds...........I was really surprised ............ but they all eat this. I now give it to my alex's and Skye. Obviously the canaries don't get it as some of the seed is a bit big for them ;D
My first impression when you said Jetta was eating this "was gee her beak is too big"...........but my birds have big (not as big as Jetta's though) beaks and they manage ok.

I should also add that I also put extra sunflower seeds in and some rolled oats and today I added some pepitos, hulled sunflower seeds (did not add any other extra sunflower seeds with this batch) and some shredded coconut to their mix. I buy my seed from the "feed barn" a produce place. I buy for small parrots then add a bit of whatever extra I like. Sometimes I buy cracked corn to add to it too. I don't add sorgum/milo as none of my birds ever (including my galah) have eaten this sorgum. I am sure they add it to the prepacked mixtures just for filling the packets. Sometimes I also add almonds. I am going to buy almond slivers and add that to the mix also.
I do this "homemade mix" also for my "guinea pigs". I buy the pellets from the feedbarn and then add sunflower seeds and rolled oats and I buy a packet of wild bird seed and add some of that to their mix. The breeder told me that the sunflower seeds are good for their fur...........and he suggested I add the extra's to their mix..........I just decided to add the wilf bird mix and they love it ..........except once again not the sorgum. ;D
