Hi - I am considering getting a pair of Plumhead parrots and havent been able to find a great deal of information about them. I am hoping for some advice. I have read that they are a quiet species suitably for suburban aviaries - is this only when comparing them to noisy ringnecks or are they actually quiet?? They also appear to be fairly easy going according to what I have read ie not aggressive with other species - does any one have experience keeping them in a mixed avaiary eg with a pair of Bourkes parrots ?? Any thoughts / suggestions welcome as I am wary of making a decision based only on what I have read Thanks Sue

I don't know too much about them, i hae heard they are hard to breed though. They need perfect conditions otherwise they just wont breed. Hopefully someone else will help..maybe it could be good in the ringneck forum? I'll see if I can ask a breeder about it and get back to you..

Ok this is what was told to me (another forum, her's has finally had it's first clutch)
"....plums have a very pleasant call. they don't have the high-pitched, annoying-as-hell screeches that the ringnecks and alexandrines have. i actually like it when my plums get going its more of a melodious call. they do have a little screech that they do when they are really upset, so far mine have only done that screech a few times in the entire time ive had them, but its much quieter than the ringnecks and alex's.
so far this baby that im raising from one of my pairs is shy, but hes sweet with me. i pick him up several times a day and hold him, he sits on my chest right under my chin, or in my lap while im on the computer. i make sure i pet him and touch him everywhere so hopefully he will be nice and tame. this is our first baby, so i cant say for sure yet whether these guys will make great pets or not...."
That is what she wrote to me about them..well..the parts that were relevent to your enquiry.

I also have a plumhead male bird. I have had alexes for a while now but saw the plumhead in a pet shop and had to have him. he is much quieter than the alexes as he is tamer from being in the shop. When I put my hand in his cage to feed him he comes to me rather than walks away. He does not like things in his cage even newspaper on the floor where he spends most of his time. As soon as it is replaced he tears it to pieces. So now he just walks on the wire floor. He loves his seed, corn, kiwifruit and apples. I am to collect a young hen friend for him tomorrow and intend putting them both in the aviary when my alexes are sold soon. Any comments as to how the 2-3 year plumhead cockbird & a 9-12 month old young hen plumhead will get on in an aviary about 2m x 1.5m. I would also like to get some more plums for the aviary but am cautious. Please comment on how many plums I should have or can I mix other birds in the aviary.
Thanks very much

I have recently purchased a pair as well, so any information you can find on them would be great to share. I have done a bit of research, but I am not looking to breed mine this year, I want them to settle in first.

Oh aren't they gorgeous? Geez I'm so bad - every time I see a pretty bird I add it to my list of 'Hmm, maybe I'd like to own some in the future'. I think I need to cut down my list some! ...but I'll add these guys first.

I fell in love with them when I first saw them. We drove to Laidly to get them. It was worth the trip. I love them so much, that I named them after my parents!

I picked up my young plumhead hen last week, she is only 9 months old. I was surprised to find that she dominates the male plumhead immediately. She really rules the roost. He is 2-3 years old and gives in every time. They are currently in a cage but I intend to transfer them to an aviary in the next couple of weeks.
Meandem, your's look great, how old are they, how do they get on together, do they mainly stay on the perch or sometimes get to ground, diet etc.
Thanks

Meandem, your's look great, how old are they, how do they get on together, do they mainly stay on the perch or sometimes get to ground, diet etc. Thanks Nice picci. They look great together. My hen doesn't seem excessively bossy, but I find in most birds then hen is usually the dominant one. My pair are about three years old, and I haven't had them long - so no babies yet. But I haven't even given them a nest yet! It might just get the better of me. The pair I have are in a flight with Moustache parrots on one side and a pair of Sun Conures on the other. The sunnies will be moved out soon, they are a little noisy in there - just waiting on another aviary to be built to put them in. I haven't seen them sit together a real lot, but when I check on them they are usually up on the perch - never on the ground. As for food - wow they can eat. Mine eat all their fruit and veges, they love oranges! I also give mine an arrowroot biscuit occassionally. They eat mainly budgie mix, but I have also given them sunflower. I have self feeders so they pretty well help themselves, but having said that, the budgie mix goes first. So far they seem very gentle towards other birds, and they also have a very gentle look in their eyes when I look at them. Sometimes it is almost like they are thanking me when I feed them their Fruit and Veg. Good luck with your new little hen, I hope she brings you as much joy as mine does with me.
