Yesterday I went to the Mooloolaba Aquarium and Aviary Centre. It wasn't on purpose. I was on the Eumundi Market with some friends and one of them wanted to go to Mooloolaba afterwards to shop for a bathing suit. On the way there I saw this pet shop and a big sign saying 'Birds'. I said if it's still open on the way back, I'd like to have a look. We were lucky and it was open. We got in and it was a petshop to my liking as it didn't sell puppies or kitten. I saw all the aviary birds and there was a couple of sun conures (never seen them in real before). I asked for the handraised tame birds and a girl showed me a huge tame bird playpen! And before I knew it I had Stromy, a 18-month old Sun Conure Cock on my shoulders.
It clicked straight away between us! He was tame, was walking around my shoulders, gave kisses, let me touch him, liked to get his tummy rubbed - he was amazing!!! I then had a look at a blue Quaker and a Lorikeet - both beautiful birds but it didn't click. The price was a bit too high and I left without him. The whole way back I looked at the pictures my friends had taken of us and I missed him. I really wanted him!
I posted on here about it and found out that the owner (?) is on here and he said AB members get a discount. The bird was still more than more than I wanted to spend but I never ever had that connection with a bird. I saw each other walking the dogs together, playing together ect. I couldn't think of anything else.
After chatting to my friends, I got in the car, picked my friends (and their whole family) up and called Mike to reserve Stromy. I just arrived 10 minutes before they closed but I was lucky that Mike took his time and I could have another play with Stormy. He didn't want to leave my shoulder. So I came out of the shop broke but with Stromy, a cage, a book, some toys and a harness and extremely happy!!! ;D
At home I put him straight onto my shoulder while I was assembling his cage. He was very interested and so cute!!! I fed him and gave him water and of course he went for a shower as soon as I opened the tap. He's now asleep inside the house in his new cage. I will post some more pics later, I didn't want to frighten him with the flash of the camera.
Welcome home Stromy! I hope we can make each other happy! You're already in my heart!

Ok, my first stupid questions... Stormy ist with me now for only a couple of days, so I didn't expect much but he like to surprise me. He steps up and shakes hand (well, feet). This morning I had him on my shoulder giving him kisses and he regurgitated his food. What does that mean? I know they're feeding their young like that but me... And then he hisses at my dog when he's on my shoulder (Stormy of course, not the dog ) He doesn't hiss at the dog when he's in his cage or on a bench or something. Is this fear or jealousy? Sorry about the stupid questions but Stromy is my first tame bird and I'm still learning a lot...

Is this fear or jealousy? the only stupid questions are those that are not asked Basically Stormy has decided he is in love! And you are the object of his love Male Suns will regurgitate to their mate, and protect their mate fron danger. He really did decide from the first meeting that you were the one He never reacted so friendly to anyone else while he was here - that's basically why he was still here after the Xmas holidays. One thing that is important is to try to get a variety of people to handle him so that he is used to a variety of people. it can make it a lot easier if someone has to look after him at any time you are away. cheers, Mike

Stormy is in love with me?! Wow! My partner handels him as well and they're fine. He's only here for a couple of days now and I didn't want to stress him with too many people, new environment and dogs. But I definetley will get other people to handle him as well. Still, it's very cute! Mike, is this true? Wow, I'm over the moon! I thought he just had a very placid nature. But my friends on the other hand couldn't get him. Oh, how wonderful! We really are a match!

Stromy has settled in well. In the morning he spends some time with me having breakfast (he likes wholemeal bread - just like me) and then he goes in his cage. I made the cage escapeproof so he#s outside now during the day where all the action is. He still hates Quentin but doesn#t mind my other dog Hera. Quentin is very jealous of Stromy too, so they will need some time to ajust to the situation. When I come home from work, I walk the dogs and then it's Stormy time. Later he will come with us but he doesn't like the harness yet. He sits with me on the couch and watches TV with me. I've rad a few training tricks and today wanted to find out what his favourite food is. I've tried sunflower seeds. He had one and didn't want any more. I gave him corn flakes and he made tiny little pieces out of them but I'm not sure if he actually ate any. I've tried raisins and they landed on my dog. I gave him cheese and he had a little nibble but wasn't too exited. I've tried fresh sprouds and the landed on the fridge... So, I was running out of options and made my own dinner. I made myself some semolina with milk and raisins, was sitting on the couch eating and who had a neck like a giraffe??? Stormy! So I put the spoon towards him and he sure ate the semolina alright! He really liked it and wanted more and more. I then drank some orangejuice and he had some of that too which he seemed to like because once again he wanted more. So, is he eating this because I am or is this really in his tastebuds? Any ideas about favourite food for little sunnies which are a bit more suitable for training than semolina and orange juice?

Hi Oceanaussi Just wondering about the semolina. Are you a born & bred aussie or are you from another country? The reason I'm asking is that I thought I picked up an accent from you when I met you in Mike's shop the other day and also you eat the semolina like we do. It's my kids favourite food. Semolina, milk and sugar etc. I was born in Czech Rep and we eat that there and mum used to make it for us all the time so now I make it for my boys. I think Stormy might have liked the cornflakes, so don't rule them out. Parrots are such messy eaters and I reckon they probably get 10% of their food in them, the rest becomes all the fallen crumbs etc - what a waste. Sometime, it takes a bird a few goes before they realize they like something, so don't give up just yet and just keep offering. You don't have to go to the extreme to please your highness (Stormy : They are likely to wanna try what you're eating so just offer them that but just small amounts. Don't forget you can offer them a wide range or fruits and veggies ie. grapes and apple. When I had my previous GCC, we used to share breakfast together. My Pinchy always liked to drink the milk from my cereal. But milk and dairy is not good for them - diarrhoea but I thought little bits would be ok? Also just a warning, don't give Stormy any avocado, rhubarb, apple seeds, chocolate, alcohol, coffee, onion. I try not to share food with my birds now, where I have my saliva on it, coz it could make em sick. My GCC now, Rhuby, she/he'll eat anything she can find in the kitchen. I make them a big tub where I throw in a bit of this and a bit of that and use it a a "treat mix". In it I have seeds, peanuts, cereals, other nuts and seeds ie pepita seeds, oats etc. Sometimes I buy a bag of those parrot treats you get in a pet shop and mix that in, aswell. Or you can also bake him birdie cake. For training, I've heard people use safflower seeds, as a 'one seed reward per trick'. But I guess you can use what ever Mr. Fussy likes

Thanks Kat! Yes, I'm from Germany so we eat semolina the same way - milk, sugar, semolina, raisins and cinamon. I will keep trying with the different treats to see what he likes. The other morning I left my peanut butter sandwich unattended and he tried to lick the peanut butter of it. I've tried some fruits and veggies but so far he hasn't touched any. I'll keep trying, he has only been here for a few days.

Oh yeah, I've been giving the "feathered kids" a small piece of a peanut butter sandwhich in the mornings. They love it. So keep an eye on that "unattended" sandwhich LOL LOL ;D
