Sounds like you're going great guns Robyn. I don't want to speak too soon but the Rosella dying stopped when I took the Peachfaces out....... I put the budgie boxes in this morning before work so hopefully might get budgies as I can't seem to get anything else. You would think the birds would do what comes naturally.

I didn't realise you had peachies in with the Rosies. I'm sure you probably won't have any more deaths now if you have taken them out.
My peachies are separate from everyone else - for just that reason. They are quite aggressive, they will even attack their own kind.
My fingers are crossed for you with your budgies. I'm sure they will give you lots of little darlings.
We check the aviary floor every morning because the finches seem to be just dropping out of nests - I think the heat has been a big factor in the last four weeks. We just pop them back in and hope that the parents do their job. So far we have only lost one blue-faced parrot finch, but the other 8 parrot finch babies are going well. The bangalese are starting to fledge, they are hilarious to watch. And to Mick's excitement - he has two baby Strawberry finches. More babies in there, but we are staying out of that section, so we are not totally sure how many babes are due to come out. Three baby princess parrots are getting very noisy now, and my hen quaker is still on her second lot of eggs - whilst her man is busy fussing over the homebuilding. He just doesn't stop. She just sits there and he just keeps moving sticks around her.

I finally decided to pull the rosella from the box, so far it is surviving on 2 feeds a day. As I stayed overnight at my daughters because I am baby sitting today I had to bring him with me. I had to sneak him in a shoe box as the partner wouldn't be impressed. All I have to do now is sneak him out this afternoon. It's going to be about 38 today and am worried about the tiel still in the box. I propped open the lid last night but they knock the wood out.
Do Eastern Rosellas double clutch. They didn't last year.

The baby Rosella is eating seed now, seems to have its head in the seed bowl quite often. Elegant still sitting on her eggs, if they hatch it will be around new year. Got quite excited as the Burke and Turk were in the boxes but have come out again.

Now that is great news about the Rosie Laraine, and even better news about your Elegant. And the Bourkes and Turqs, finally for you it is all starting to come together. My fingers are crossed for you, I hope that you have a never ending supply of little babies.
As for the Rosella's double clutching, I've seen it happen here in the wild! So my answer to that question would be yes. But of course, it all depends on the birds themselves - whether they want to or not.
I have a pair of wild grassies that nest every year in a log above our aviaries that Mick put up for them, and they have THREE clutches. Absolutely amazed the first year it happened. At first they were a little startled by us, but they are used to us now. Funny though, when there is someone different in the backyard, they are very mysterious. My crimson rosella laid 20 eggs this year, unfortunately with all the extremely hot and then random cold days and then extremely hot days again, she never hatched any of them. She actually ate a few of them - she has never done that before so maybe that is natures way - who knows?
I'm thrilled for you Laraine, the news is all good. You must have been a good girl this year - Santa has come early!

I spoke to my vet today about the problems I am having with the baby Cockatiels. They are always dying in the box. So far 12 have hatched but only 1 has lived long enough to fledge. She thinks it might be lack of calcium, even though they have a good diet of fruit and vegies. Unfortunately that won't help the 6 eggs that are currently being sat on. Anyway the next baby that dies will be autopsied.

I was checking the tiel box yesterday and there was a chick with the egg half cracked open. This morning the progress was still the same so I picked the shell off to release the baby. I'm not expecting it to survive as has been the case this year, but am keeping fingers crossed.

I don't know Laraine, we are going to have to get you some babies one way or the other. If it is a calcium deficiency & your birds don't eat the cuttlebone try Concentrated Pink Vitamin/Minerals i get mine from the PSOA in Brisbane or Balanced Cal. I have a 8 ltr bucket & i mix about 1/4 cup of the pink vit/min coating most of the seeds. Has any of the other eggs hatched, try sprinkling cal on everything, when i had the cockatiels i used to scrape the cuttlefish powder all over the seed & soft foods. I also gave them lots of corn on the cob as well as egg & biscuit [from the petshop] & sprouted seeds. I found my tiels used to go for all the soft foods first so they could feed the chicks quick. I would think that if it was cal deficiency you would notice the eggs being soft shelled or the hens starting to deplete its bones of cal & be quite weak in the legs. I am no Vet of course but this is not normal especially with all the care you give your birds. I also have a new little baby eckie that hatched in the incubator on Wednesday & i have been feeding it every 2 hours ;D OH JOY. Robyn

I have been giving them calcium in their water but the idea of the ground up cuttlebone on the seed is a thought. Another one hatched yesterday. I really hope they survive.

Another one hatched yesterday so now there are 3. There are so many as I had another pair sitting on 3 eggs but they went off them so I put them under the other pair.

One of the tiny babies died so I took it to my vet for an autopsy. So far nothing has shown up, I have to ring him back next Sunday with a report and they will investigate further if any more have died.

Laraine, the baby that died did you notice if the crop was empty? are these birds established breeders? and the cuttle fish is a good idea I have been doing it for years rather than putting a calcium supplement in the water, however I grate it over the birds soft food not the seed as the birds do husk the seed before eating it and stand a chance of not ingesting as much as they could,.....Just my thoughts on it, I hope you don't have any more losses.

I had 2 bourkes in November, now flying in the aviary now mum is back in the nest box again. Not sure how many eggs. My pale headed rosella is in the nest box again, 3 eggs, hopefully they hatch this time. My male has let all his feathers grow in and hasnt plucked for 3 months now and my females eye infection cleared up a few months ago so hopefully she hatches this lot. Hoping for my green cheek and yellow sided to go this season....might still be too early.

Sounds like it is all happening for you Courtney!
We have had a steady flow of finch babies, won't be selling any this year, building back up stocks after the critter went through!
