The heat has been relentless. Unfortunately I have lost a few babes due to the heat. I have a sprinkler system on the top of all my aviaries, but even with the sprinklers on - it is still 42 degrees in side the aviaries. And 42 degrees outside the aviaries. I have been playing in the sprinklers too! This poor little red-faced parrot finch was just too hot and he was hanging out of the nest. He has three siblings in the nest and they all take turns hanging out the front of the nest. Often we can see two of them together. They are just adorable. But on a really sad note, my darling Napolean passed away last night. He really has been feeling the heat in the last week, and he didn't look real well, so I moved him into the hospital box, and kept a close eye on him, but sadly I think old age finally caught up with him. He was a beautiful bird, and for the four years that I owned him, (his previous owner had him for a very very long time) my whole family cherished him. Nappy will be sadly missed. He is now buried in the front garden. Fly free my darling Nappy, I will miss you and your little clicking noises.

So sorry to hear of the loss of Napoleon - Red caps are one of my very favourite species. I have only ever had 2 to hand raise but they were a delight, and I would dearly have liked to have kept one, but it wasn't to be.
I've been remiss in not reporting on our baby birds - been pretty busy just feeding. We have 16 birds in the house being fed at present - 4 Alexes, 7 Ringnecks, 2 Cockatiels, and 3 Quakers. Another 8 Quakers have been passed on to some of my shop staff to feed as well. We have weaned another 6 Alexes, 6 Ringnecks, 3 Scaly-breast Lorikeets, a couple of Sun Conures, and various Cockatiels which have all gone off to the shop to be sold.
Its been a busy period, and each year we say we are going to cut back but it never seem to happen for some reason.
cheers,
Mike

Sorry to hear about Napoleon Ellen, he was such a pretty boy. Gee Mike I'm surprised you have time to even turn your computer on. Luckily I didn't lose any babies this year to the heat. It was hard work on Sunday keeping them alive. A baby tiel hatched on Saturday and the dad stayed in the box the whole day sitting on it. What dedication. There are 3 more tiel hens sitting so fingers crossed. The ones I really want to breed aren't although the Elegant hen is now living in the breeding box.

Thanks Mike and Laraine. I'm still a little teary every time I think of him. He was such an important part of our lives. I agree Laraine, I often wonder where Mike gets the time to even breathe! Mike, you obviously do an amazing job, otherwise you wouldn't be doing it. We have promised ourselves that we will cut back too, but like you it never seems to happen. What good daddy tiel you have there Laraine. Fingers crossed for the girls, and hope they hatch something for you. Good news about the elegant too, it sounds promising! I've had five baby parrot finches fledge today, they just look so tiny. And also another lovebird hatched this morning. I'm supposed to be selling all my lovebirds! I want to get some canaries and I've been told - it's one or the other! Lots of other babies to come out of the nests yet, but I'm not disturbing them, it is still too hot here! Another scorcher today Plus we have fires over the otherside of the dam, and the smoke is thick at times. Today it has cleared a little, so I would say the bush fire brigade had a busy night. They must be exhausted - it has been two weeks of fighting fires. Hopefully it will be all under control soon.

I'm still not having any luck with the breeding. I have lost 2 of the baby Rosellas in the last few days, and still only 1 baby tiel.

I lost the 3rd baby rosella yesterday, everyday I get home from work there is another dead. I have no idea why. There is only 1 left which had a full crop this morning. Things aren't going well in my household.

That is sad, the poor little rosies. If it was me Laraine, I would be taking the last Rosella out of the box and feeding it yourself. You must be beside yourself wondering why it is all happening. We have lost a few babes to the extreme heat, but finally today the weather has eased a little. And the fires in our area have slowed down considerably. My baby bangalese fledged this morning - I'm so proud of them.

I thought of that Ellen, can't decide what to do....... The problem is that I'm away from the house for 11 hours on weekdays and I'm afraid it would starve during that time. The funny part is they survived through the really hot days and on Monday when it was cooler started to die.

Is there a pet shop nearby - they maybe able to lend a hand??? Hope the little champ is still going strong when you read this. It's a crazy cold snap, it won't last long. Today is warm again up here, here's hoping it stays this way a little longer. And other news, Mick was ready to sell our full red front scarlet, he reckons that little fella was pestering everyone else too much, Mick got in and checked the nest box yesterday - and they have a newly hatched chick - No wonder he was being a right royal pain in the butt! He is a proud Dad! We are selling a lot of the bigger parrots off, Mick wants to concentrate on the Neo's and his finches. A bit of less looking after for our birdy-sitters when we go away, neo's and finches aren't as demanding.

weve finished our breeding season for the year since taking out our boxes, It is just getting too hot here for the birds to breed and care for young comfortably we had a very successful season and we are happy with what weve acheived with many of our birds being first time parents, we had a few double clutch, we are giving some birds a break and not breeding them next year. Im still rearing a young major mitchell, a western long billed corella, finishing of a young galah and i may be rearing some lovely creamino and pied lovebirds for a lady who bought one of our galahs Laraine its sad to hear that yuou are losing babies hopefully it cools down a little over there for you so your birds get a bit of a break!

Must be hard for you guys trying to keep your birds happy in that heat, were having the worst rain on record at moment its hardly stopped in a month its a shame we cant have some of your weather over here in uk. our breeding season is just around the corner now with the galahs being the first to lay in my collection, usually in late feb. they breed same time every year no matter what the weathers like, last year there was snow all over the aviaries.

Wow how do you keep them warm when there is snow all around? Do you lose many chicks to the cold. I wouldn't mind a couple of days a week rain.

At last an egg...................after weeks of sitting in the box my Elegant has laid an egg. Whooo. Still only 1 tiel, one hatched on Saturday, but was dead on Sunday....... She is sitting on another 2 eggs (maybe she needs to go to the Birdie Retirement Village) LOL. If she lets these hatch and die I will need to do something about things. My naughty budgie is again sitting on 2 eggs.

We dont heat our birds even in snow and frost they just acclimatise to our weather, i live in the south where its far warmer than the north. We do have to protect against wind though. Ive never lost a galah chick and my birds regulary rear there own.

Sunny babies are hatching, 1 chick today,
Going to pull the 4 baby eckies tomorrow.
Also have another 2 eckie eggs. Haven't checked for fertility yet but they should be OK.
GCC are spending a lot of time in the nest box so maybe more eggs there.
Laraine there must be something upsetting your birds. Or maybe they have a low grade bacterial or fungal infection that the parents are passing onto the chicks. Could be the reason the chicks are dying on you. Are you able to take some dropping to your vet & see if he will check them out under the microscope.
Robyn.

3 Elegant eggs now, I'm not game to candle them as she is sitting really tightly on them. Still one Rosella left, he seems to be going ok, crop seems to be full. One baby tiel as well as 2 more hens sitting on eggs due to hatch soon. Must do some more candling on the weekend.

Good news about the Rosie, hope the little bundle of joy keeps getting bigger and better. Elegants - ohhhhhh, my poor girl lost her three bubs whilst we were away on holidays. So upsetting to come back and find that. My fingers are crossed for you Laraine, hope your babies keep coming.

I am stoked the 4 eckie babies turned out to be a boy & girl in each nest so have 2 unrelated pairs. I was starting to get worried, i have had such a run on girls lately. I already have a buyer for a pair.
Sunny has 2 chicks now 1 more egg to go.
